Artillery is one of the most effective and fun weapons in Fallout 4. By throwing an artillery smoke grenade you can call down fire from the sky, obliterating any enemy in your path. We’ve shown you how to unlock and use artillery, as well as how to get more artillery smoke grenades so you can keep destroying the wasteland piece by piece, but one aspect of the weapon seems to be confusing a lot of players. How far is the artillery range in Fallout 4? Well, there’s unfortunately no easy answer, with the game not giving a firm indicator, but some tests have narrowed it down to one easy to use metric.
Five and a half squares. That’s the best estimate from myself and many players as to how far the artillery range is in Fallout 4. What does that mean? Well, pull out your Pip-Boy, go to your map, and zoom in. Faintly placed in the background you will see small squares delineating distance on the map. Measure out five and a half of these from the settlement where you have your artillery station and you should have an approximate idea of how far your artillery range is.
This means, for example, that the artillery station at the Castle can just about reach the outskirts of downtown Boston, probably making it to Goodneighbor or just outside of it. Sanctuary can just reach the USAF Satellite Station Olivia to its East, and should easily hit Thicket Excavations. Just keep your radio tuned to Radio Freedom when deploying your artillery smoke grenades and you should get informed if the target is out of range, then check your map to see what might be going wrong.
The best method of alleviating even the concern of range is to populate all of your Fallout 4 settlements with artillery stations. Once you do they’ll cover a wide enough area that it shouldn’t be a problem. Just be sure to get as many settlements recruited as possible, and get extra settlers to come there so you have people to assign.
